With most of us on a fitness mission this month, smelly trainers are inevitable and a simple Google search will tell you there are lots of weird and wonderful natural remedies to this pongy problem.
Here are just a few of the quirkier ones…
Yes, you did read that right. Apparently if you fill a sock with cat litter, tie the top with an elastic band and leave it in your smelly shoes, it will eradicate unpleasant smells.
Bicarbonate of soda
A healthy sprinkle of bicarb inside your shoes should absorb the odour. It’s also anti-fungal.
Put your trainers in a plastic bag and put them in the freezer for 48 hours. Allegedly this kills the bacteria that’s causing the pong.
Water and vinegar
After your workout, spritz the lining of your shoes with a 50:50 water and vinegar solution. The vinegar may overpower the smell if nothing else.
Tumble dryer sheets
Great for your bed sheets and apparently effective if you leave them in your shoes overnight.
Black teabags contain tannins, which are very effective in killing bacteria. Put a black tea bag in boiling water for a couple of minutes, then remove to cool. Once it’s cool enough to handle, place it in your shoes for an hour.
You can buy cedar wood insoles, which have a fresh smell and antibacterial properties.
